Pulmonary Hypertension Caused by a Coconut Left Atrium

EC Leung, N Hirani et al. Keywords: pulmonary hypertention; coconut left atrium; chest x-ray image

ABSTRACT

“Coconut atrium” was first described in 1898 and is most commonly associated with rheumatic heart disease. This case demonstrates a dramatic chest x-ray image of extensive circumferential calcification of the left atrium. The abnormality was thought to result in elevated pulmonary pressures and severe right heart failure in the absence of significant mitral valve dysfunction.
